Behrman House to Headline Las Vegas Tech Conference

It’s easy to fall in love with tech toys but how do we choose tools that build 21st Century skills and advance the curricular goals we have set for our schools? That’s the topic of Terry Kaye’s keynote address at the Merging Technology With Jewish Education conference at Midbar Kodesh Temple, Las Vegas, on February 26 and 27, 2012.

Choosing the Right Tech Tools

What’s the right technology for your school? As more religious schools consider the leap into the technology age, educational directors are faced with questions about what equipment to consider. It can feel like a daunting choice.

Discover Inspiration and Advice for Teachers in the Themes of Tu B’Shevat

If you should happen to have a sapling in your hand when they tell you the Messiah is coming, first finish planting, then go out and greet the Messiah.         --Yochanan ben  Zakkai, Avot de-Rabbi Natan 31b

Inspired Illustrations

About six months ago, we got a surpising request. A local Judaica Gallery wanted all of the artwork from Siddur Mah Tov: A Family Shabbat Prayer Book for an installation called “Inspired Illustrations.” We were so excited, because this artwork was created especially for the siddur by a local educator and visual artist whom we simply adore, Julie Wohl. Not only that, but Julie was at the time just finishing up artwork on a new project for us called Simply Seder, a haggadah and Passover planner that will be available in January.

Top Tweets from URJ Biennial

#URJ Biennial Even though I couldn’t go to the Biennial this year, I almost felt like I was there. Thanks to twitter and all of the twitteratti. From Jonathan Woocher’s stunning use of technology to energize his speech on education to President Obama’s speech, I was able to keep up with all of the happenings at the biennial. In addition to the play-by-play, I also got to LOL at some of the tweets. Here are some of my faves:

Where Do You Give?

Babaganewz partnered with the American Jewish World Service to create an educational program and contest for middle school students to help them think about giving during the season of receiving. Where Do You Give? Reimaginging Tzedekah for the 21st century is a campaign and contest to help students articulate their own tzedekah priorities and lets them experiment with these priorities by making real decisions about how to allocate real money.

The Prize for Perseverance

When I saw the news headlines announcing that Professor Dan Shechtman, an Israeli, won the Nobel Prize in chemistry, I was proud. But when I read further and learned the details of his story, I knew that we just had to interview him for Babaganewz.  Professor Shechtman discovered something called quasicrystals, but his fellow scientists initially rejected this discovery. He was mocked, expelled from his scientific group, and made a laughingstock. But he persisted, eventually proving the truth in his discovery and now winning the coveted Nobel Prize for it.

An Old-Fashioned Writer, Writing in the New Digital World

A relative, 10 years after beginning his Ph.D. thesis, still hadn’t finished.  Couldn’t get it just right.  Knew it would be scrutinized.  Wanted to make it right; didn’t want to be caught in imprecision, or worse yet, error.  10 years. Not finished.

Teachers Learn in Bunny Slippers

Short, highly focused—and customized—webinars have helped teachers across the country build successful programs using the new Alef Bet Quest and Kol Yisrael blended learning Hebrew materials. And best of all, they are truly ‘come as you are’ because teachers can access from any location—even from the family room at home comfortably clad in pjs and bunny slippers (no one will know!). Here’s how it works:
