From the Bible GENESIS 24 |
The first marriage described in the
Bible is between Rebecca and Isaac. Read this story to find out
how Isaac's wife was chosen. |
Abraham decided it was time for his son, Isaac, to marry. He spoke
to his most trusted servant, Eliezer.
"Go to the city where my brother Nahor lives," he
instructed Eliezer. "There you will find a wife for
Isaac."
"How will I know her?" Eliezer asked, wondering what
sort of woman Isaac would like.
"God will point her out to you," Abraham replied.
So Eliezer saddled ten camels, loaded them with gifts, and set
out across the desert. When reached the city where Nahor lived,
he led the camels to the well. There he saw many young women
filling their jars with water.
"So many women!" Eliezer thought. "How will I
choose the right one?" But then he remembered Abraham's
words.
"Please, God," he prayed, "help me find a good
wife for Isaac."
At that moment, Eliezer noticed a beautiful young woman with a
clay pitcher on her shoulder. He approached her and asked if
he might drink some water from her jar, for he had just
completed a long trip across the desert.
"Of course, my lord," the young woman replied. And
before he could thank her, she continued, "Your camels
must also be thirsty." And she went to the well and drew
more water, until all the animals were satisfied.
"What is your name?" Eliezer asked.
"I am Rebecca, the daughter of Bethuel, the son of
Nahor," she answered.
Eliezer smiled. He knew that God had helped him find the
perfect wife for Isaac.
