Why Do We Smash a Glass?
Some people say that the breaking of a glass at the wedding
ceremony reminds us of one of the saddest times in our
people's history: the destruction of the Temple in
Jerusalem. Others say that the glass is broken to remind us
that even at our happiest celebrations, we should not
forget that there will be moments of sadness in our future.

Long ago in many Jewish communities a wedding was celebrated
for a whole week. For seven days, the bride and groom would
be invited to the homes of friends and family members for
lunch and dinner. The Seven Blessings, Shevah Brachot,
were repeated at the end of these meals. Some couples
continue this tradition today.
