Modern Jewish Heroes

Each generation of our people has its heroes--righteous men and women who dedicate their lives to the creation of a better world through the mitzvot.

ABRAHAM JOSHUA HESCHEL (1907-1972)
Fulfilling the mitzvah of study (talmud Torah) taught Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel how to make the world a better place for all people. He fought for the civil rights of African Americans and for the freedom of oppressed Jews in what was then called the Soviet Union.
JONAS SALK (1914-1995)
Jonas Salk received the Presidential Citation and Congressional Medal for Distinguished Achievement for his many contributions to public health (pikuah nefesh). His discovery of the vaccine against polio saved thousands of children's lives.
GOLDA MEIR (1898-1978)
Love of Israel (ahavat Tziyon) inspired Golda Meir to settle in Eretz Yisrael. There she worked to establish the Jewish state and became the fourth Prime Minister of Israel in 1969.
LILLIAN WALD (1867-1940)
Lillian Wald pursued justice (tzedek) by relieving human suffering. She brought health care to the poor and fought for laws to protect the rights of children.
