Shabbat Blessings
Family Education: Havdalah Service
Traditionally, Shabbat ends when three stars can be seen in the sky. The sun has set, we recite the blessing over the wine, we pass around the spice box to savor that last moment of our sweet day, and finally, in the glow of the Havdalah candle, we recite the blessing of separation that sets Shabbat apart from the rest of our week. Kiddush
Again we say the blessing over the wine.
Fill the wine cup to overflowing, allowing some of the wine to spill onto the plate. Lift the cup and recite the short version of the Kiddush.
Barukh atah, Adonai Eloheinu,
melekh ha-olam, borei pri ha-gafen. |
|
Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the world, who creates the fruit of the vine. |
Set the cup down and continue with the blessing over the spices below.
Blessing over the Aromatic Spices
Barukh atah, Adonai Eloheinu,
melekh ha-olam, borei minay v'samim. |
|
Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the world, who creates all kinds of spices. |
Lift the spice holder.
Sniff the spices, then pass the spice box around to allow each person to smell them.
