Focus Jewish Education on the Outdoors.
Written by Behrman House Staff, 12 of May, 2014Is environmental education one wave of the Jewish future? According to recent studies, the Jewish community is taking learning outdoors.
In a recent article on Jweekly, education that blends Jewish learning with the outdoors and the environment are attracting a growing number of young Jews.
Nigel Savage, President of the Jewish environmental nonprofit organization, Hazon, confirmed this shift in Jewish education.
"For the last decade, a growing number of young Jewish people have been connecting Jewish tradition on the one hand with food, the environment and the outdoors on the other," Savage said.
According to Seeds of Opportunity: A National Study of Immersive Jewish Outdoor, Food and Environmental Education (JOFEE), 84% respondents of the study felt environmental experiences increased their sense of hope for the Jewish people.

Are you looking for a new way to connect your students to the environment?
Now your 6-8th grade students can explore connections between what they believe and how they live by looking at environmentalism through a Jewish lens with Our Place in the Universe.
This innovative program was developed by Dr. Marc Rosenstein, Tova Sacher, and Sigalit Ur, from the Galilee Foundation for Value Education, which uses techniques of informal education to build the Galilee as a model of a civil society.
Using the powerful tool of a reflective journal, this approach uses checklists, personality quizzes, debate topics, and writing prompts to guide learners to develop their own understanding of how the choices we make each day can be influenced by the values we hold as Jews. The materials represent a thought provoking element that adds opportunities for deep reflection to an experiential environmental program.
Your students can deepen their environmental understanding further with the free matching game pack. The Our Place in the Universe Game Pack includes crosswords, wordfinds, Mad Libs, and more.
All game pack activities are free and can be printed or played right online.
