Summer Debate: Do I Send My Kids to Summer Camp?
Written by Behrman House Staff, 30 of June, 2015School is ending, and for some the decision to send their children to camp is still not clear. Here is a supporting article and some resources to help your decision.
Tabletmag.com recently featured a mom and her decision to send her children to camp. Marjorie Ingall shares her experience and why it was the best investment she ever made.
Ingall compared previous years of sending her kids to camp with a report by The University of Chicago focused on youth development, psychology, sociology, and education.
"One of the report's conclusion is that academic skills aren't enough to turn kids into successful adults," Ingall explains.
Ingall's children started attending camp during what the report called "middle childhood" (6-10); when kids would work on self-awareness and self-control, learning-related skills and knowledge, and interpersonal skills.
"And yea, so it was!" Ingall said. "They had to live in a bunk, in a community, with new expectations of behavior and responsibility."
Summer camp helped her kids make friends and build a connection to Judaism through experiences.

For some, summer camp just isn't an option. You can still help your children connect to Judaism with help from the student journal Our Place in the Universe and activities featured on our Camp Connections Pinterest page.
