Kveller is Right, Hebrew School IS Awesome!
Written by Behrman House Staff, 03 of November, 2014Yes, Malina Saval remembers the days memorizing haftarah portions and growing up listening to others complaining that Hebrew school was a waste of time, but in her latest Kveller blog post Saval begs to differ.
Part-time Hebrew School educator, online magazine editor for Kveller, and mother of two spends every Sunday sharing her Jewish wisdom with 8th grade students.
"The best part: My kids get to come with me, spending those same two hours in their own classes, braiding challah, making recycled water bottle Kiddush cups, and singing songs about the Jewish holidays," Saval explained, "The first thing my 6-year-old son Boaz says when he awakes Sunday morning is, 'Can we go to Hebrew school now?'"
We look back at our Hebrew school days with nostalgia - don't we want the same for our children?
Your children have so much to learn.
"It might be a lesson on kashrut, or a visit from the pathologically joyful Israeli scouts, or even just being surrounded for a couple hours by other Jewish kids... It all adds up to something. If you get excited about it, they'll get excited about it."
