Rabbi Dov Lipman is the first American in 40 years to be elected a member of Israel’s Knesset (MK). An ultra-Orthodox rabbi who made aliyah from Silver Spring, MD, Lipman represents a new wave of politicians who are committed to creating a pluralistic society in Israel. During his inaugural speech to the Knesset, Rabbi Lipman credited his grandmother, a Holocaust survivor, for influencing his pluralistic outlook. “There were no sectarian divisions in the death camps,” he recalled her saying. “No one spoke of secular, religious, traditional or Ultra-Orthodox.”
Seemingly overnight, MK Lipman has captured the attention of world Jewry and gained respect for his love for the Jewish people. He has displayed spiritual courage by challenging his own ultra-Orthodox community to reject extremism and isolation. He summarized his political goals during an interview with The New York Times, saying, “How a person serves God or doesn’t serve God is a personal thing, and we have to find a way to create a Jewish country where people can be themselves and everybody respects each other regardless.”
