The deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown—both black Americans killed by white police officers—have sparked protests around the country, reawakening the debate about whether America’s criminal justice system is racist.
With the latest Hot Topics: The Deaths of Garner and Brown resource, you can help students discuss the need to improve the relationship between police officers and citizens of all races.
In this lesson students will be able to:
- Understand both sides of the debate.
- Explore Jewish texts to understand the debate from a Jewish perspective.
- Write slogans that focus on the need for peace and improved racial relations.
Judaism recognizes the need for a strong police force to maintain order and peace while our sages also teach that a person has the right to self-defense. Your students can decipher both sides and make their own decisions by purchasing your copy of Hot Topics: The Deaths of Garner and Brown here.
Each Hot Topics edition includes an article, a lesson plan for a 50 minute class, and a glossary of terms. A new topic will be available every two weeks for $3.99.
Did you miss the first series of Hot Topics? You can find all eight here.
