Camp Connection: Help Students Reflect on Summer Camp Experiences through Play
Written by Behrman House Staff, 14 of August, 2015How can a deck of cards help returning students reflect on their camp experiences from a Jewish values point of view?
Jewish Values Challenge Cards help kids process some of their feelings about camp, camp expreiences, and camp friendships using 58 Jewish values in a playful environment using card-based games created by Robyn Faintich.
Each card in this 58-card card deck includes the name of a significant Jewish value in English, Hebrew, and transliterated Hebrew, along with a one-sentence explanation to help clarify the value.
Each deck includes instructions for 13 different games in three categories: (1) Values Clarification (e.g., “Judge and Jury”), (2) Team Building (e.g., “What’s Important to Us?”), and (3) Skills Development (e.g., “Say It in Hebrew!”)
Here's how you can connect students to camp with the game "What's Important to Us?":
Give each student ten cards. Have each student reflect on their camp exierences and choose the values they learned. Then put students in small groups. As a team they have to agree on 5 values that were the most important values to learn at camp. After the team has agreed on the 5 cards ask them these questions: What was easiest in coming to a group consensus?; What was most difficult?; Did you defend or lobby for a specific value to the rest of your group? - Did you convince them? - How?
Ideal for use with youth groups, clubs, camps, and Hebrew High programs for:
· Values clarification
· Team building
· Skills development
· Social justice programs
· Mitzvah project development
You can also add 32 scenarios to allow students to explore real life challenging situations that can be handled with Jewish values. Learners will discuss how to handle situations like receiving a gift they do not like, obeying parent's rules, receiving too much change, and much more.
