Haftarah Blessings Reconstructionist Version
The Haftarah blessings recited before and after the prophetic reading that follows the chanting of the Torah praise God for giving us the prophets. In the blessing before the Haftarah, the Reconstructionists remove the reference to Israel as God’s people to indicate a belief that all people are God’s people.
In the blessing after the Haftarah, Reconstructionists remove reference to Israel being exiled from our land, because we now have the state of Israel. Reconstructionists also remove reference to a literal Messiah and the return of David as king. Instead we use a version that sees Elijah coming to announce the beginning of Messianic days, a time when everyone will open our hearts to our families, communities and all the inhabitants of our world, bringing a time of peace.
