Repairing God's World

Do you know the blessing that is recited over bread, Ha-Motzi? We say: Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.

What does the blessing mean? Do loaves of hallah grow in the ground? Does God plant corn muffins and frankfurter rolls? Does God "bring forth bread " without our help? Could we do it by ourselves?

Let's think about it. After all, we are partners with God. How does the partnership work?

Asbestos is a mineral that is strong and flexible. It doesn't burn, or easily conduct heat or electricity. The ancient Egyptians used it for making cloth and in modern times it has been used in thousands of manufactured products, such as floor and ceiling tiles, cement, and fireproof clothing.

Until recently, no one knew that when asbestos is inhaled, it can cause lung disease and cancer. Laws were passed to control its continued use and the long, dangerous, and costly process of asbestos removal began.

Do you think we are required to repair damage we have caused even when--in the beginning--we didn't know that our actions would bring harm? Why or why not?
