The Rabbi Who Wouldn't Say Good-bye

Once there was a rabbi who refused to say good-bye to Shabbat. "I WON'T say good-bye," she insisted. "Shabbat is my favorite day, a day of rest and peace."

"Don't worry. Shabbat will return next week," a little boy said to comfort the rabbi. "There is so much to look forward to!"

What do you look forward to on Shabbat? Why?

Sad to Say Good-bye?
Do you ever feel sad when saying good-bye to a friend? Do you feel less sad when you know that you will see each other again soon? Why?

Living
SHABBAT
Havdalah

We say good-bye to Shabbat with a ceremony called havdalah. We light a tall, braided candle and say Kiddush over wine or grape juice. We pass the spice box and smell the sweet spices.

Say it in HEBREW
SHAVUA TOV
After havdalah we wish one another shavua tov—"a good week."

Circle the things that help us say good-bye to Shabbat.

What do you see that helps us say both hello AND good-bye to Shabbat?
