Behrman House Blog
My Kids Are My Best Testers
Written by Jeremy Poisson, 07 of October, 2014
One of the best parts of my job, besides making games is sharing my work with my family.
I’ve been developing educational interactive learning software, games, and apps for over 13 years. My oldest will become a Bat-Mitzvah later this year. And along with her younger sister and brother they have been testing my work since they could touch an iPad or click a mouse.
Sometimes, my development cycle lands perfectly. When I was developing one of Behrman House’s Hebrew Primer’s my two daughters were 7 and 8 years old. They were the exact target age for the product.
I was pleasantly surprised how helpful it was to just watch my kids use early versions of my programs. I could quickly tell when I had an issue that needed to be addressed because my kids got stuck or would say, “Daddy, this is stupid!” I also could tell when I was doing something right, because my kids wanted to play over and over again.
My kids are my harshest critics and my biggest fans. They are my best testers because I can use them to test early and often. I quickly learned the earlier I show something to them the better results I get and the quicker I can develop. I even show my initial sketches to my kids for feedback.
I try my hardest to get my kids approval when developing digital learning games and apps. My favorite products that I develop are the ones my kids test and like best, not just because are involved in the process, but because they truly are my best testers and help me create Behrman House’s most engaging digital learning software and apps.
Check out some of the digital stuff my kids help test:
