Behrman House Blog

From Freelance to Full Time

By Ann Koffsky.

About 6 months ago, I had a big, huge change in my life: Shockingly, my kids weren’t babies anymore and I went back to work at Behrman House as an editor.

Well, that’s not quite accurate. I was always working when I was home too—but it was a freelance. I was an author/ illustrator combined with stay-at-home mom. So my life was something like this: carpool, write, grocery shop, paint, carpool, make dinner, put kids to bed, write, paint. Rinse and repeat.

Needless to say my sink was often full of dirty dishes.

Now I am a full time worker. This new reality comes with many adjustments, from wardrobe (no more sneakers and smocks—I have to wear real shoes) to grocery shopping only on Sundays, to not having to buy my own pens (I just walk over to a supply closet and there they are. No more Staples runs!) My lifestyle has definitely shifted.

I kind of had expected the above. What I didn’t expect would how much having colleagues to learn from would enhance my skills. I am learning so much about education, best practices, editing—all sorts of things from my new friends/colleagues.

One of the most fun things I’ve learned is Flash…stay tuned for my next post to hear more about it.
