The Technology: Online File Conversion

Online-convert.com can easily convert a digital file from one file format to another. For example, convert a Word document (.doc) to a PDF and vice versa. To convert a document, audio, video, or image file into another format, go to http://www.online-convert.com/, then follow the instructions on this tutorial.

In Your Classroom
You might want to change a file from one format to another because:

  • Some file formats are incompatible with the software on a computer. If you want to share a file with students, parents, or colleagues, it is a good idea to convert it first to a more common file type. Common file types include JPEG (an image file format), PDF (a document file format), MP3 (an audio file format) and MP4 files (a movie file format).
  • Some file formats are too large to be attached in an email.
  • Some file formats take longer to download than others.
  • Some file formats are more easily edited than others. If you want to share a document with students, you might want them to be able to type text directly in the document or you might want the document to be harder to edit.
