Activities for Sukkot and Simchat Torah
Activities for Sukkot and Simchat Torah
  • Make a chain to decorate your school sukkah. On foam strips, ask the students to use permanent marker and write their wishes for the new year.
  • Give the students the basic description of the laws for building a sukkah. In small groups, ask students to design a creative sukkah that fits the regulations. Give each group a theme, such as a sukkah in outer space, a Hawaiian sukkah, a sukkah in a rainforest, a sukkah on a cruise ship, a sukkah of toys, etc.
  • Have your students create poster-size invitations and placemats for the Ushpizin visitors for each night of Sukkot. Be sure that the invitations and placemats include images and sayings that are specific to the invited Ushpiz.
  • In preparation for Simchat Torah, visit a synagogue sanctuary and take a Torah from the ark and look at it with your students. Discuss how a Torah is written (e.g. what materials may be used, etc.), and, if possible, invite a scribe to talk with your class.
  • Before Simchat Torah, ask the students to compile a list of songs they may sing to celebrate the cycle of reading the Torah. Make and decorate a song sheet of the songs to be distributed at services the night of Simchat Torah.
